Rugby in Pakistan

Rugby in Pakistan has to grow in one of the most difficult sports markets in the world. Cricket dominates national attention, public conversation, media space, and youth dreams. Field hockey has historic importance, while football, squash, kabaddi, wrestling, athletics, and combat sports also have their own communities. In that setting, rugby is not part of the everyday sports imagination for most people.

Still, the sport has a place. Pakistan has the population, athletic base, and institutional structure to support rugby at a niche level. The challenge is not finding athletes with physical ability. The challenge is building rugby knowledge, coaching depth, regular competition, and public awareness.

How the Sport Finds Its Base

Rugby in Pakistan is most likely to develop through schools, universities, clubs, and military or service-linked sports networks. These environments can provide organization, fields, coaches, and repeat participation. That structure matters because rugby is not easy to grow casually. Players need to learn tackling, spacing, set pieces, safety, and the rhythm of the game.

Sevens is especially important. It is easier to organize than full fifteens, requires fewer players, and gives emerging rugby countries a more practical way to compete internationally. For Pakistan, sevens can also connect the sport to regional tournaments and Olympic-style development.

A Niche With Real Potential

Pakistan’s rugby future depends on whether the sport can become visible beyond a small circle of participants. Youth programs, women’s rugby, regional matches, and better coaching could all help. The country already produces athletes with speed, strength, toughness, and tactical discipline across other sports.

Rugby is unlikely to challenge cricket’s place in Pakistan, but that is not the measure of success. A stronger rugby scene would give Pakistan another international team sport, another route for physical athletes, and another connection to Asian and global competition.
