Rugby in Somalia

Rugby in Somalia has very little mainstream visibility. Football is the country’s dominant global team sport, while athletics, basketball, and local physical games have more natural recognition. Rugby requires a specific sporting infrastructure that is difficult to build without stable clubs, coaches, referees, and playing spaces.

Because of that, rugby in Somalia should be understood as a very early-stage sport. It is not part of everyday sports culture in the way football is. Many people may know rugby only through international media, diaspora communities, or contact with countries where the sport is more established.

The Diaspora Connection

One of the more realistic paths for Somali rugby is through the diaspora. Somali communities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe live near stronger rugby cultures. Players, coaches, or organizers with Somali heritage could help introduce the sport, create awareness, or support future development.

Inside Somalia, sevens would be the most practical starting point. It needs fewer players, can be taught more quickly, and works better for short events than full rugby union. Youth programs, schools, and community sport projects would be the most likely places for rugby to appear.

What Growth Would Require

For rugby to grow in Somalia, the sport would need basic foundations before anything else: safe coaching, reliable fields, equipment, and regular training groups. Without those pieces, rugby remains an occasional activity rather than a real sport system.

The future is likely to be modest and gradual. Somalia is not close to becoming a rugby country, but rugby could still find a small place through diaspora energy, youth sport, and regional African rugby connections. At its best, the sport could offer young athletes another route into teamwork, fitness, discipline, and international competition.
